The Books of Distinction is a distinguished group of books that was selected by a panel from the Templeton Press. In announcing these books, Sir John Templeton helps to reiterate his mission and the driving force behind the John Templeton Foundation: “For two hundred years research has been devoted to science, technology, and economics. We have benefited enormously—yet recently more and more people are realizing that ‘something’ is missing. As we begin the 21st century, there is a renewed thirst for spirituality and for research into spirituality. We have an incredible opportunity before us: if we now dedicate research to spirituality, and information grows just 5% yearly, we will have more than a 100-fold increase in a single century!” Templeton Press was founded in January 1997 as a program of Templeton Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit foundation established by Sir John Templeton. Its focus is to publish scholarly and trade books on a variety of subjects, including the connections between science & religion, spirituality & healing in medicine, the verification of universal spiritual laws, character development, and freedom, as well as manage special projects. The John Templeton Foundation was established in 1987 by Sir John Templeton to encourage a fresh appreciation of the critical importance — for all peoples and cultures — of the moral and spiritual dimensions of life. It is the Foundation's purpose to stimulate a high standard of excellence in scholarly understanding, which can serve to encourage further worldwide explorations of the moral and spiritual dimensions of the Universe and of the human potential within its ultimate purpose. Through its programs, the Foundation seeks to encourage the vision of tremendous possibilities for spiritual progress in an open and humble approach to life; encourage institutions of learning to incorporate training towards excellence in character in their efforts to prepare the next generation for service; to encourage growth in appreciating the potential of free societies; and to promote the understanding of the significant responsibilities associated with freedom in its several aspects, moral, spiritual, political and economic.
