God List
Price: $24.95 This book charts the path of humanity’s great spiritual odyssey: the search for God. Author Keith Ward guides the reader
through arguments about theories, doctrines, and facts, which are difficult to
establish. In the process, the reader comes across the reduction of religion
to somewhat of an argumentative and exploratory science. Ward believes that the
answer to the majority’s dilemma in understanding God is that the approach
taken by many seekers is too literal. For example, one problem is the belief
that if there is a God, God must be the sort of being that the sciences can
describe. In the search for who God could be, Ward provides a tour of how God
has been
conceived in Western thought, beginning with Homer and Descartes and progressing
through thinkers like Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Kant, and poets like Blake
and Wordsworth. Along the way, Ward discusses the prophets, the Ten Commandments,
the idea of evil, and more. Book
of Distinction: 2004 Keith Ward, Ph.D., is Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Oxford
and formerly Professor of History and Philosophy of Religion at King’s
College, London University. He is one of the country’s foremost writers
on comparative religion and Christian issues. A Gifford Lecturer, whose most recent book, Defending the Soul, is an affirmation of human divinity and value. |
