Einstein and Religion List
Price: $19.95 The philosophy of religion and the quest for spiritual truth preoccupied Albert
Einstein—so much that it has been said “one might suspect he was
a disguised theologian.” Nevertheless, the literature on the life and work
of Einstein, extensive as it is, does not provide an adequate account of his
religious conception and sentiments. But what exactly was Einstein’s religious
credo? In this fascinating book, the distinguished physicist and philosopher
Max Jammer offers an unbiased and well-documented answer to this question. The
last chapter deals with the controversial question of whether Einstein’s
scientific work, and in particular his theory of relativity, has theologically
significant implications, a problem important for those who are interested in
the relation between science and religion. Both thought-provoking and engaging,
this book aims to introduce readers, without proselytizing, to Einstein’s
religion. Because presentation of such a subject is easily susceptible to personal
bias, extensive use has been made of quotations from the sources so as to avoid,
as far as possible, any misinterpretations. The extensive documentation of
the text therefore fulfills two functions: It not only enables the reader to
supplement
knowledge on a particular issue but also to verify that the author has not
prejudiced the presentation. Throughout the volume, the reader encounters discussions
of
Einstein’s philosophy of religion and alleged theological implications
of his scientific work. By no means are they conceived as a logical justification
of his philosophy of religion, not only because all these implications were published
after his death. If Einstein were still alive, he might reject some of the arguments
found throughout this volume. One of the major objectives of this study is to
clarify Einstein’s conception of religion by explaining this apparent
contradiction. Book
of Distinction: 2004 Max Jammer, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus of Physics and former President of Bar-Ilan
University. Dr. Jammer earned his Ph.D. in experimental physics before attending
Harvard University for postdoctoral research. He later received an appointment
as Lecturer at Harvard. Dr. Jammer co-founded the Institute for Philosophy
of Science at Tel-Aviv University. He has served as President of the Association
for the Advancement for Science in Israel. Dr. Jammer has received both the
Monograph
Prize of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the prestigious Israel
Prize. His recent works include: Concepts of Mass in Classical and Modern Physics
(1997), Einstein and Religion (1999), and Concepts of Mass in Contemporary Physics and Philosophy (2000); he is also the author of numerous scientific
papers in
professional journals. Dr. Jammer is a member of the New York Academy of Science
