of Distinction: 2005 Ted Peters is a Professor of Systematic Theology at the Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, CA. He is an expert on the theological implications of the new gene science and the author of many books, including Playing God?: Genetic Determinisn and Human Freedom. Martinez Hewlett is Professor Emeritus at the University of Arizona and the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including the American Cancer Society Faculty Research Award and the Fogarty Senior International Fellowship. Hewlett has served as a consultant to the National Institutes of Health, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, several state governmental bodies, and private industry. He has degrees in chemistry (University of Southern California) and biochemistry (University of Arizona), and postdoctoral training in molecular virology (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Hewlett's systems thinking continually leads him to explore the crosscurrents of science and religion. He is currently a consultant to the Center for Theology and the Natural Sciences, a part of the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, California.
